About Me
With our allergies, I have learned to be frugal; while shopping at several different grocery stores.
Some of the rewards of being frugal allow us to grow a variety of fruits, vegetables, and herbs. This allows for a sustainable food resource on our property. Being self-sustainable has its benefits. Our children now have an understanding of where food comes from. Some of my children tend to stay clear of the garden, lest I task them with weeding. However, now that they have grown, they see the benefits of gardening and enjoy it.
Grandma always said, "You are what you eat." Boy! ... was she right. We have noticed cross-contamination issues with commercially raised animal products and the diets they are fed. We are unable to eat commercially raised beef and poultry. This also includes fish that is farm-raised. All of this is because of the grain-based diets they are fed. We purchase our beef from local farmers that raise "grass-fed" beef.
As a result, we started to raise our own chickens, quail, and turkeys. We implemented a fermenting process to feed them so they are corn and grain-free diet. Another self-sustaining food resource and protein alternative are meat rabbits. While raising meat rabbits sounds inhumane, our rabbits have a very lush and comfortable lifestyle.
For many years we have been collecting sap from maple trees to render maple syrup. We have also been beekeeping for the past two years. These are two ways you can naturally bring natural sweeteners to your lifestyle. Doing this has changed our lives.
This has helped structure responsibilities and develop skills. As we reap the rewards of our labor, we are now healthier and have more energy. Not everyone has this opportunity to home-grow foods and sweeteners for their family. There are many healthy choices and natural sweeteners you can purchase through your local grocery stores. Often times we do this as we live in a northern climate with snow and below-freezing temperatures.

Hi, I'm Chloe. I am a wife, a mother of four children, a gardener, a blogger, and a hobby farmer. The ocean and gardening are two of my favorite things.
Preparing and making food for my family is nothing short of a challenge sometimes. I search for recipes my family will enjoy, then I change or substitute various ingredients in the recipe, so we may eat without having an allergic reaction. Recently, I have been experimenting with different types of ethnic foods such as Greek, Asian, and Mediterranean-styled foods to broaden our eating horizons.
